lyrics

TWO RAVENS

Inspired by the traditional ballad of the same name

Two ravens talk as daylight fades
And battles end in bloody glades,
Now we shall have our dinner soon,
All by the light of the winter moon.

Look over there, is that soldier dead?
The ground around him is all red,
Why isn’t his hound willing to go
And let us dine on here below?

There comes his hawk down from the sky
With claws to keep us from landing nigh,
And then a lady! What a sad surprise,
We’ll still be starving at sunrise.

Her kisses could not wake him,
So she resolved to take him
To the lake where they used to stroll
Until they heard the war drums roll.

The grave is shallow she made for him,
The dirge too low she played for him,
Yet every knight should have the same
Hawk and hound and faithful dame.”
