JOHNNY BARTENDALE (A TRUE STORY)

Here's Johnny Bartendale,
Whose face is ghastly pale,
He's got mud on his clothes,
He's got worms in his nose.

He was taken to the gallow's pole
then he was laid down in a shallow hole,
Without a prayer, without a tear,
In the Earth to disappear.

From his grave he was rescued
By a man from Hazlewood,
Judged again but how could we
Condemn a man that God had forgiven and set free

He was a piper by trade,
But that was not his only crime,
The hangman said he was dead
But the Lord decided it wasn't time

Where's Johnny, who can tell ?
He didn't die and go to hell!
Where's Johnny, who can tell
Why he didn't die and go to hell?

From his grave he was rescued
By a man from Hazlewood,
Judged again but how could we
Condemn a man that God had forgiven and set free
